Trade Work = Working for the Trade
I will do limited trade work for the right clients.
If you are interested in me doing trade work for you, please understand the following.
Most importantly, I do not do 3rd party full custom projects.
Let me explain what I mean by that…
As defined by the MJSA Council of Custom Jewelers (of which I was a founding member) custom work often will fall within 3 major categories.
Made to Order: Existing designs manufactured by request, modified only by sizing and choice of metal and/or gemstone.
Semi Custom Design: Existing designs that have been modified to alter their shapes or appearance.
Full Custom Design: A jewelry design made from scratch specifically for a customer.
Trade Work vs. Full Custom Design: Concept and Pricing
Full Custom is my specialty and my main source of income. I’m really good at it, from all aspects of design and manufacture to client communications. Full Custom is a collaborative effort and normally involves a lot of communication between my client and myself. I will initiate the project on information given to me in our initial consultations and then make modification or refinement based on feedback I get from my first design efforts. I have set prices for this service which I do not discount for trade accounts. And as mentioned above, I will only work with the end user on projects of this nature since the very critical chain of communication only gets muddied through a third party. At risk of being repetitive, I'm going to clarify by saying that I won't do your client's custom project with you in the middle of communication.
If you are a jeweler wanting design help with a new line of jewelry, or want a single, very special piece, you are the end user and I will work with you on full custom projects, but the price for this service will not, in most cases, be discounted from my normal full custom prices. Probably still a great value to you because you will be reproducing the designs and your cost will be amortized over your entire production run.
Trade work, as I use the term, more typically involves receiving a design concept that is completely spec’d out. In other words, you will give me all the information that I will need to make your piece of jewelry or provide you a CAD file or printed prototype. You will pay me a discounted price for this service, and we are both happy. Of course, there is some room for minor adjustments within this sort of project, I am not inflexible. There is not room for a lot of back-and-forth in terms of refining the design since you will have been clear about what you want from the beginning.
Please call me to discuss your project, I'm available at any reasonable hour, Arizona time! +1 541-729-2531
